Milei may skip the Mercosur summit

Argentine President Javier Milei is considering not attending the Mercosur summit. This decision could deepen the rift with Brazil and slow regional integration, while Argentina strengthens trade ties with the US.

Milei may skip the Mercosur summit

Buenos Aires, November 13 (NA) — President Javier Milei is considering not participating in the next Summit of Heads of State of Mercosur, scheduled for December 20 in Foz do Iguaçu, according to the official schedule released by the bloc. Official sources told the Argentine News Agency that the President has not yet defined his attendance, but so far he is leaning towards not attending. This move would deepen the rift with Brazil and President Luiz Inácio 'Lula' da Silva and would imply a new brake on the regional integration process. President Milei's possible absence from the summit comes as the Argentine head of state advances in the commercial understanding with the United States, which is another clear sign of Buenos Aires' differentiation from the regional bloc. The cooling of Argentina's relationship with Mercosur also occurs in a context where Brazil, under the leadership of 'Lula' da Silva, is promoting the deepening of the bloc and the reactivation of its strategic agreements. In the Brazilian capital, they insist on advancing with the signing of the trade agreement between Mercosur and the European Union before the end of the year. If the understanding were to be finalized, it would be a milestone in the bloc's trade policy, although it would then have to go through the parliamentary approval process in each of the partner countries.
